Water Feature Aftercare

Practical guidance for keeping garden water features clean, maintaining healthy water flow and protecting pumps and components throughout the year.

Team Bespoke Aftercare

Keeping your water feature clean and flowing

Regular light maintenance helps a garden water feature remain clean, attractive and reliable. Removing debris, maintaining the correct water level and protecting the pump can prevent many common performance issues.

Every system is different, so always follow the instructions supplied with your pump, lighting, filter and water feature components.

1 Maintain the water level

Water levels naturally reduce through evaporation and splash loss, particularly during warm or windy weather. Check the level regularly and top it up before the pump becomes exposed.

  • Never allow a pump to run dry.
  • Top up gradually rather than overfilling the reservoir.
  • Keep water below surrounding paving and electrical components.

2 Remove leaves and debris

Fallen leaves, grass clippings and soil can block pump inlets, affect water flow and encourage poor water quality. Remove visible debris before it breaks down.

  • Use a small net or remove debris carefully by hand.
  • Keep nearby planting trimmed away from moving water.
  • Check more frequently during autumn and after storms.

3 Monitor the water flow

A noticeable reduction in flow may indicate a low water level, blocked pump intake, dirty filter or obstruction within the system. Switch the power off before carrying out any visual checks.

  • Do not operate the system if the pump sounds unusual.
  • Never pull or lift a pump using its electrical cable.
  • Report recurring loss of flow for professional inspection.

4 Control algae carefully

Some algae growth is natural, especially in warm, sunny conditions. Light deposits can normally be removed with a soft brush suitable for the feature’s surface.

  • Never add household bleach or general cleaning chemicals.
  • Only use treatments approved for your particular feature.
  • Consider surrounding plants, wildlife and pets before treatment.
Pump and Filter Care

Protecting the heart of your water feature

Pumps and filters must remain clear of leaves, silt and other debris. Before cleaning any accessible component, isolate the electrical supply and confirm that the system is completely switched off.

Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions and only remove components designed for routine user cleaning. Do not open sealed electrical parts or alter cable connections.

Always isolate the power first

Water and electricity require particular care. Do not reach into the water, handle the pump or inspect electrical components while the system is connected to power.

Cleaning the feature

Switch the system off and use a soft cloth or non-abrasive brush to remove light surface deposits. Test any approved cleaning product on a small, discreet area first.

Avoid metal brushes, pressure washers, harsh acids and abrasive cleaners, which may damage surfaces, coatings, seals or joints.

Limescale and mineral deposits

Mineral deposits may develop where water repeatedly evaporates, particularly around spillways and edges. Remove light deposits regularly before they become heavily established.

Only use products confirmed as suitable for the feature material, pump system and any surrounding planting or wildlife.

Unexpected water loss

Some water loss from evaporation and splashing is normal. A rapid or persistent drop may indicate excessive splash, displaced components, a leaking connection or damage to the reservoir.

Switch the system off if the water level could expose the pump, and report repeated water loss rather than continually topping it up.

Water quality and odour

Cloudy water or unpleasant odours can result from decomposing leaves, stagnant areas, algae or an ineffective filtration system.

Remove debris, check the circulation and arrange professional maintenance if water quality does not improve.

Cold Weather Care

Protecting your feature during winter

Freezing water can place pressure on pumps, pipework, reservoirs and decorative components. Winter requirements vary between systems, so follow the instructions provided for your installation.

  • Clear leaves and sediment before prolonged cold weather.
  • Do not allow a pump to operate without sufficient water.
  • Never smash ice against the surface of the feature.
  • Do not use salt, antifreeze or household de-icer in the water.
  • Protect removable components if instructed by the manufacturer.
  • Check the system carefully before restarting it in spring.
Different systems require different winter care

Some pumps can remain in operation, while others should be isolated, drained or removed. Contact Team Bespoke if you are unsure which procedure applies to your water feature.

Children and pets

Supervise children around all garden water features and prevent pets from disturbing pumps, cables or decorative components. Water from an ornamental feature should not be treated as drinking water.

Features containing plants or wildlife

If your feature contains aquatic plants, fish or visiting wildlife, use only products and maintenance methods confirmed as safe for them. Specialist pond-care guidance may also be required.

When to Contact Us

What should be reported?

Please switch off the affected system and contact Team Bespoke if you notice:

  • Rapid or persistent water loss.
  • A pump that stops, becomes noisy or repeatedly loses flow.
  • Visible damage to electrical cables, fittings or connections.
  • Water reaching areas containing electrical components.
  • Cracks, movement or damage to the feature or reservoir.
  • Persistent cloudy water, odour or excessive algae.
  • Damage following freezing conditions or severe weather.

This guide provides general aftercare information. Always follow the instructions supplied by the manufacturers of your water feature, pump, filter and electrical components. Electrical inspection and repair must be completed by a suitably qualified person. Our workmanship guarantee remains subject to Team Bespoke’s terms and conditions.
