Keeping your garden lighting performing beautifully
Professionally installed garden lighting adds atmosphere, highlights key landscape features and makes outdoor spaces safer after dark. Occasional cleaning and simple visual checks will help your system continue performing as intended.
Outdoor lighting contains electrical components, so maintenance should always be carried out carefully. Electrical faults, damaged cables and sealed fittings must be inspected by a suitably qualified professional.
Keep fittings clean
Dirt, algae, water marks and garden debris can gradually reduce the amount of light produced. With the lighting switched off, gently wipe accessible fittings using a soft damp cloth.
- Avoid abrasive pads and harsh cleaning chemicals.
- Do not direct a pressure washer at lights or connections.
- Never immerse a fitting or force water around its seals.
Manage surrounding plants
Plants can grow across fittings, block illumination or trap moisture and debris around them. Trim surrounding growth carefully while preserving the intended appearance of the planting.
- Keep leaves and stems clear of lenses.
- Do not pull or move lights by their cables.
- Allow suitable airflow around each fitting.
Check alignment
Spike lights and adjustable fittings can move through gardening, animal activity, soft ground or accidental contact. Check that they remain secure and directed toward their intended feature.
- Only make minor adjustments when the power is off.
- Hold the fitting rather than twisting its cable.
- Do not force a fitting that feels seized or unstable.
Review timers and sensors
Seasonal daylight changes can affect when your lighting is required. Adjust accessible timers or user controls when necessary, following the instructions supplied with the system.
- Keep daylight sensors clear of foliage and debris.
- Check programmed times after power interruptions.
- Do not alter transformers or enclosed electrical controls.
Before cleaning or checking your lights
Switch the garden lighting off and allow fittings to cool completely. Carry out cleaning in dry conditions and only work on components that can be reached safely from ground level.
Check each fitting visually for impact damage, movement, corrosion, condensation or exposed wiring. Stop using the affected part of the system if anything appears unsafe.
Do not open sealed fittings, transformers, junction boxes or cable connections. Never attempt an electrical repair unless you are suitably qualified to carry out that work.
Condensation and water
A brief light mist may occasionally appear inside some fittings when temperatures change. Persistent condensation, visible water or repeated moisture build-up should be investigated.
Do not remove covers or attempt to dry the inside of a sealed fitting yourself, as this can damage its weather protection.
Lights that stop working
One failed light may indicate a lamp, fitting or local connection issue. Several lights failing together may relate to a circuit, transformer, timer or power supply.
Record which lights are affected and whether the fault is constant or intermittent, but avoid repeatedly switching a faulty system on.
LEDs and replacement parts
Many modern garden lights use integrated LEDs rather than replaceable bulbs. Do not dismantle a fitting unless its manufacturer specifically identifies a user-replaceable lamp.
Replacement components must be compatible with the original system and suitable for outdoor use.
Gardening near cables
Take care when digging, edging lawns, aerating soil or carrying out planting close to garden lights. Cable routes may be hidden beneath the surface or planting.

Simple checks throughout the year
- Clear fallen leaves, soil and mulch from around fittings.
- Trim planting that blocks light or presses against fixtures.
- Check that adjustable lights remain correctly positioned.
- Review timer settings as daylight hours change.
- Look for visible damage after severe weather or garden work.
- Keep drainage around ground-level and recessed lights clear.
Avoid burying fittings beneath soil, mulch, gravel or planting unless they were specifically designed and installed for that purpose. Covering them can trap moisture, obstruct light and cause overheating.
What should be reported?
Please switch off the affected lighting and contact Team Bespoke if you notice:
- Exposed, cut, crushed or otherwise damaged electrical cable.
- A loose, broken or substantially displaced light fitting.
- Persistent water or heavy condensation inside a fitting.
- Lights that flicker, trip the power or repeatedly stop working.
- Several lights failing at the same time.
- Damage following excavation, gardening or severe weather.
- Burning smells, unusual heat, scorching or any immediate safety concern.
