Practical guidance for cleaning and maintaining composite fencing, managing marks and protecting panels, posts and gates from avoidable damage.
Caring for Your Composite Fencing
Composite fencing provides a contemporary, lower-maintenance alternative to timber, but it still requires periodic cleaning and inspection.
Composite products differ between manufacturers. Always follow the care instructions supplied for the exact boards, posts and accessories installed in your garden.
The Essentials
Clean Periodically
Remove dirt, algae, bird deposits and organic debris before they become established on the panel surface.
Use Gentle Products
Warm soapy water and a soft non-metallic brush are normally suitable, subject to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Allow Natural Movement
Composite boards naturally expand and contract as temperatures change. Do not fill designed gaps or channels.
Inspect After Storms
Check posts, panels, caps, gates and visible fixings after strong winds or accidental impact.
How to Clean Composite Fencing
Gentle cleaning will normally remove surface dirt without scratching or altering the manufactured finish.
Inspect the Fence
Check for loose components, impact damage or instability before beginning any cleaning.
Clear Vegetation
Carefully move or trim plants that obstruct the surface or prevent air from circulating around the fence.
Remove Loose Debris
Brush away cobwebs, leaves and loose dirt using a soft non-metallic brush or cloth.
Apply Warm Soapy Water
Use a mild soap solution or cleaner specifically approved for the composite fencing product.
Clean Gently
Work methodically over the boards without forcing water into panel channels, posts or secured components.
Rinse Completely
Rinse with clean water so detergent and dirty water do not dry and leave a visible surface film.
Not Every Composite Product Is the Same
Composite fencing can have capped, uncapped, embossed or co-extruded surfaces. A cleaner or treatment approved for one product may damage another.
Before using pressure-washing equipment, algae treatment, stain remover or another specialist product, identify the exact fencing range and check its current maintenance instructions.
Damage caused by unsuitable chemicals, equipment or cleaning methods may not be covered by the product manufacturer’s warranty.
Preventing Marks and Physical Damage
- Keep barbecues, fire pits and heat sources well away.
- Do not attach heavy planters or equipment to the boards.
- Keep soil, mulch and wet leaves below panel level.
- Trim dense vegetation that traps moisture against the fence.
- Avoid repeatedly directing sprinklers at the boards.
- Protect posts and panels from strimmers and lawnmowers.
- Do not fill expansion spaces or post channels.
- Check panels and posts after storms or accidental impact.
Keep Flames and Hot Equipment Away
Composite fence boards can melt, distort or permanently discolour when exposed to concentrated heat.
Barbecues, fire pits, patio heaters, burning garden waste and other heat sources should be positioned on a suitable surface and kept well clear of the fencing.
Heat and impact damage are not installation defects.
Choosing the Correct Treatment
Test every treatment on a small, discreet area and follow the product and fencing manufacturers’ instructions.
Mud & General Dirt
Allow heavy mud to dry, brush away the loose material and wash the remaining residue with warm soapy water.
Bird Deposits
Remove deposits promptly using warm soapy water and a soft brush, then rinse the complete affected area.
Leaves & Organic Marks
Remove trapped leaves and clean remaining marks using a product approved for the composite surface.
Algae, Moss & Mildew
Use a manufacturer-approved treatment, protect nearby planting and rinse the boards thoroughly afterward.
Grease & Oil
Blot fresh marks without spreading them. Use only a suitable composite cleaner or degreaser.
Paint, Adhesive or Cement
Do not scrape or apply solvent. Contact Team Bespoke before attempting to remove construction products or permanent coatings.
Care for the Complete Fence System
Composite boards form part of a complete system that may also include aluminium or composite posts, channels, caps, rails and fixings.
Keep Channels Clear
Do not pack soil, stones, sealant or other material into visible panel channels or designed expansion spaces.
Check Caps and Trims
Inspect accessible post caps, finishing trims and rails after severe weather or accidental impact.
Monitor Panel Movement
Small seasonal changes may be normal. Report panels that repeatedly leave their channels or become visibly insecure.
Protect the Posts
Avoid impact from vehicles, machinery, lawnmowers and garden equipment around the post bases.
Check Gates Carefully
Do not force a gate that has become difficult to close. Check for debris and seek advice before altering hinges or latches.
Do Not Add Heavy Loads
Fence boards and panels are not designed to support shelving, storage, heavy planters or climbing equipment.
Colour and Panel Dimensions Can Change Naturally
Composite products respond to sunlight and temperature. Some boards may undergo an initial period of colour settling or gradual weathering after installation.
Boards can also expand and contract as temperatures change. The visible spaces within channels or around board ends may therefore vary throughout the year.
Minor shade differences, surface-pattern variation and normal seasonal movement do not usually indicate an installation defect.
Check Before Using Pressurised Equipment
Excessive pressure can mark composite boards, alter the manufactured finish and force water into panel channels and post systems.
Pressure washing should only be used where the exact fencing manufacturer permits it. Follow its pressure limit, fan angle, working distance and cleaning instructions.
Warm soapy water and a soft brush should always be attempted first.
Do Not Sand, Paint or Drill Without Approval
Avoid Sanding
Sanding can permanently alter the colour, texture and protective surface of composite boards.
Avoid Generic Paints
Paints, stains and sealers may not bond correctly and can create peeling or uneven discolouration.
Avoid New Fixings
Drilling or attaching items can weaken boards, restrict movement and affect the product warranty.
Do Not Use or Work Beside an Unstable Fence
Strong winds can place substantial loads on panels, posts and gates. Avoid any section that has become loose, displaced or unstable.
Take clear photographs and report significant movement promptly. Do not force panels back into channels or brace the fence to another structure before inspection.
What to Avoid
Barbecues, fire pits or hot equipment close to the panels.
Harsh chemicals or cleaners not approved by the manufacturer.
Wire brushes, metal scrapers or abrasive sanding.
Pressure washing unless the product guidance permits it.
Filling panel channels or designed expansion spaces.
Attaching heavy objects, planters or storage to the boards.
Painting, drilling or modifying the panels without approval.
Using or working beside a visibly unstable fence section.

Maintenance Issue or Installation Concern?
Dirt, algae, staining, minor shade differences and normal seasonal expansion are generally maintenance or material matters. Loose posts, panels repeatedly leaving their channels, significant movement or an unstable fence should be reported for review.
